History

Enigma is the product of the most recent new construction in a long lineage of wooden IOD’s going back to the Norwegian roots of the class in 1936. She was commissioned by Steve Bush and Peggie Findlay from Tern Boatworks of Gold River, Nova Scotia in 2008. The original plans of Bjarne Aas were provided by the IOD World Class Association with the cooperation of the late Jordy Walker, then president of the Association, and Charlie Van Voorhis. The keel was laid down in October 2008 and lofting commenced shortly thereafter. Enigma was constructed to the precise specifications of the original plans including white oak frames planked with quarter sawn Oregon pine, plywood decking and mahogany trim. The spar is aluminum with a 7/8’s rig. She was launched on August 26, 2009 and joined the fleet for the end of the 2009 season. That fall a team from the World Class Association, including Kevin Farrar, Charlie Van Voorhis, and Herb Motley visited Nova Scotia and spent two days obtaining detailed measurements of Enigma’s hull, documenting conformity with the original design.
